When a Tla’amin family loses a loved one, the Nation is here to help. This page outlines the supports available to Citizens and their families, and how to access them.
Our approach is grounded in Ta’ow, the teaching of walking gently. That means that while the Nation continues to offer services during a time of loss, it does so quietly and with respect for the family’s grief.
Financial Support
For all Tla’amin citizens the Nation provides $1,500 in direct financial support, paid directly to the funeral home of choice.
Families can also apply for additional needs-based funding:
- Clothing for the deceased – up to $250
- Travel and accommodation for immediate family – $300 per person
- Food at the service – up to $500 paid directly to caterer or business
In-Kind Support
The Nation also provides:
- A funeral plot for Tla’amin Citizens
- Maintenance and care of the cemetery
- Street closures and honour guard
- Access to the Salish Centre
- Access to the kitchen and supplies (dishes, coffee, tea, cream, sugar, napkins, water)
- Community notification through Facebook and door-to-door flyer delivery
- A template for pamphlet development and printing of pamphlet
- Access to health and social supports
Family Responsibilities
Families lead the funeral planning. This typically includes identifying a family spokesperson, addressing the will, registering the death with the Nation, and planning the service itself (pallbearers, flowers, officiant). The Nation is here to support you through this, not to take it over. Reach out any time for guidance.
