Clam Licenses

The Tla’amin Nation holds “Z2ACL” Aboriginal Commercial Licenses for Area B and Area C for commercial clam digging.

The Clam licenses are owned by Tla’amin Nation and fished by community members. Tla’amin Nation Lands and Resources Department maintains these licenses and re-submits them yearly ahead of the Commercial Clam harvesting season. To retain the license each year, the license holder must use their license and comply with the ACL policy and DFO regulations.

The ACL policy applies to employees of Tla’amin Nation who are responsible for allocation to community members the Category Z2ACL license eligibility held by Tla’amin Nation. When licenses are renewed annually by DFO, the Director will direct staff to follow this policy if there are available licenses to allocate. This Policy only applies to administration of Z2ACL and no other category of clam licenses.

Allocation and re-allocation of licenses can be described in the Aboriginal Commercial License (ACL) Management Policy. The schedule for the harvesting has limits and is designated on specific beaches as per license requirements and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans harvesting areas.

Holders of licenses must confirm with Tla’amin Nation staff that they are interested in utilizing their license for the upcoming season prior to the season starting. Tla’amin Nation staff will then register the renewal of the harvesting license in the National Online Licensing System (NOLS) and make the harvester aware of when the license is approved for pick-up.

Tla’amin Fisheries staff use DFO reports to confirm that a license has been used. If there are no records at yearend, the license may be reallocated. If you keep copies of buyer records, you can provide the slips to Tla’amin Fisheries staff to show your license was fished (prior to the end of the clam digging season), and ensure your buyer submits your records to DFO. Licenses are non-transferable. Individuals must utilize their own licenses.

If a new fisher, it is up to the harvester to sign up for a Fisheries Identification Number:
