Tla’amin Nation Launches ʔəms nəm (the way we are) Mental Health and Wellness App

Digital repository of culture and connection aimed to keep Nation members well.

April 18, 2024

Tla’amin Nation is hosting a community feast tonight to launch a new Mental Health and Wellness App called ʔəms nəm (the way we are).

ʔəms nəm is over a year in the making and was designed by a community-driven working group of Tla’amin Elders, youth, and health and education staff.  It features Elder stories, cultural teachings, ʔayʔaǰuθəm language lessons, traditional songs, and land-integrated learning.

Tla’amin Elder Doreen Point recognizes the important of online tools to aid this generation’s wellness journey. “Now, as Tla’amin people, we can go online anytime, anywhere and access our culture and our teachings.” Point says that more teachings will be added to ʔəms nəm every month.

The App’s development was made possible through a partnership with Checking In. It can be downloaded through the Apple app store or Google play. Once downloaded, community members can listen to songs, stories, and teachings, participate in wellness challenges, and track their own self-reported mental wellness.

Hegus John Hackett is optimistic that the app will bridge the connection between our generations, “Knowing who you are and where you come from is key to a healthy identity, sense of self, and future happiness” said Hegus Hackett “We know that Our Tla’amin čʊy (children) are hungry for our taʔaw and this App puts our culture and teachings on the phones and into the pockets of young people.”

Start your cultural connection journey by downloading on the app store or google play.
