Tla’amin Nation organizes Drive-thru test site, encourages residents to experiencing symptoms to get tested

For Immediate Release- September 10, 2020
Tla’Amin Territory, Powell River, BC

Tla’amin Nation now has over 10 lab-confirmed cases of Covid-19 and a number of citizens experiencing Covid-19 symptoms and awaiting test results. The Nation has enacted a Shelter in Place Executive Order to protect its citizens and neighbouring communities.

Today, in collaboration with Vancouver Coastal Health, Tla’amin Nation held a drive-thru testing site at its health centre, and over 50 members got tested. Test results take between 24-48 hours, and those with positive results are contacted right away.

“As more Covid-19 cases are being confirmed in our community I’m encouraging people to rely on facts not fear,” said Hegus Clint Williams, “The best thing we can do right now to slow and stop the spread is to stay put and check on one another by phone and social media. We have a team of people ready to help those who need it, so I would encourage our Nation members not to be shy to call our help line, especially Elders and those with transportation needs.”

To slow and stop the spread of Covid-19 Tla’amin may need to extend its Shelter in Place order.

Those who have tested positive are recovering at home under the supervision of healthcare providers or receiving care at Powell River General Hospital.

Tla’amin Nation thanks the community of Powell River for your generous offers to donate goods and services. Tla’amin individuals and families seeking help for things like grocery delivery and essential supplies, and Powell River residents offering help, are encouraged to connect on the Powell River Mutual Aid FaceBook site https://www.facebook.com/groups/1040065769697969/about.

Tla’amin Hegus and Legislators thank you for your cooperation at this difficult time. We will get through this together. Stay home, stay safe, and stay kind.
