FireSmart is about taking practical steps at home and across the community to reduce wildfire risk before an emergency happens.

The Tla’amin Nation FireSmart program supports prevention-focused, community-led wildfire risk reduction. Our work includes education, home assessments, mitigation planning, seasonal safety messaging, and collaboration with departments, residents, and regional partners.

FireSmart does not remove all wildfire risk, but it helps reduce the chances of damage by supporting safer homes, stronger community readiness, and informed decision-making.

What We Do

The FireSmart Department supports wildfire risk reduction through education, assessments, planning, and coordination.

Our work includes:

  • Home Ignition Zone assessments for homes and yards
  • Wildfire Mitigation Assessments
  • Critical infrastructure FireSmart assessments
  • Cultural site FireSmart assessments
  • Community education and engagement sessions
  • Seasonal preparedness and wildfire safety messaging
  • FireSmart guidance for homes, buildings, and community spaces
  • Support with mitigation planning and project priorities
  • Collaboration with Interagency departments, TNFD, regional partners, and wildfire prevention programs

What We Do Not Do

The FireSmart Department is not an emergency response service. During an active fire or emergency, call 911.

FireSmart also does not replace the role of the Tla’amin Nation Fire Department, BC Wildfire Service, Public Works, Housing, or other departments. Our role is prevention, education, assessment, and planning support.

We do not usually provide immediate clean-up, landscaping, tree removal, or vegetation removal services. However, we can help identify priorities, provide guidance, and connect community members with available resources when possible. Larger mitigation projects may depend on funding, seasonal planning, safety requirements, and staff capacity.

Home Ignition Zone Assessments

Tla’amin residents can request a Home Ignition Zone assessment to learn how to reduce wildfire risk around their home.

These assessments look at practical steps that can be taken around the home and yard. Many recommendations are simple or low-cost, such as clearing debris, moving flammable materials away from the home, cleaning gutters, or improving the first 0–1.5 meter area around the building.

To request an assessment, contact the FireSmart Department at 604-413-7020, linzy.elliott@tn-bc.ca  or use the FireSmart BC online request form: https://firesmartbcplatform.ca/request-home-inspection?agency=Tla%27amin%20Nation
