Tla’amin has been stewarding ʔəms giǰɛ since time immemorial.
Land use planning is one way Tla’amin Nation exercises decision-making authority over Tla’amin Lands. It helps make sure growth and development happen in a way that reflects Tla’amin values, laws, and responsibilities to the land.
A Land Use Plan can help answer questions like:
A Land Use Plan can help answer questions like:
- Where can housing go?
- What lands should be protected?
- Where can business or community uses happen?
- How should we plan for roads, water, sewer, and other services?
- How do we protect culture, harvesting, shorelines, water, and sensitive areas?
Tla’amin currently has two Land Use Plans:
Land Use Plan Update
Tla’amin Nation is currently updating its Land Use Plan. A lot has changed since the 2010 and 2014 Land Use Plans were created. Tla’amin is now a self-governing Treaty Nation through ʔaʔǰɩnxʷegəs, the Tla’amin Final Agreement. Community needs have changed and we need clearer planning for housing, roads, water, sewer, stewardship, land access, climate change, and future growth.
The update will bring the 2010 and 2014 plans together into one clearer Land Use Plan for Tla’amin Lands. This work builds on more than 30 years of community wisdom, research, engagement, the Treaty, and previous land use planning. After the plan is adopted, it will continue to be reviewed and updated as community needs change. Community feedback will help shape the draft plan.

What Will be in the Updated LUP?
The updated plan will help guide decisions in these key areas:
- Housing and Moving Home: The plan will help look at where housing could be built on Tla’amin Lands. It will also help support clearer pathways for Citizens who want to move home or apply for land.
- Protecting Important Lands: The plan will help identify lands, waters, shorelines, cultural places, and sensitive areas that need care and protection.
- Stewardship, Harvesting, and Access:The plan will help guide how Tla’amin Lands are cared for and used. This includes harvesting, cabins, trails, access, and peaceful enjoyment of the land.
- Infrastructure and Servicing: The plan will help consider where roads, water, sewer, drainage, and other services are needed to support future growth.
- Economic Development: The plan will help identify where business, commercial use, resource use, or other economic opportunities may be appropriate.
- Food and Agriculture: The plan will help consider lands for food security, agriculture, gardens, and other food-related uses.
- Climate Change and Future Growth: The plan will help Tla’amin prepare for climate change, coastal impacts, water needs, wildfire risk, and long-term community growth.
- Clearer Land Processes: The plan will help clarify land use questions about land applications, subdivision, secondary suites, cabins, development, and other approvals.
